In
the UK, career assessment has become increasingly commonplace, but not all is
as in-depth. In schools, there are a number of career questionnaires, and some
are better than others. Ideally, any career assessment test in UK schools would
involve measures of motivation, aptitude and personality.A
pupil’s favoured subjects may be reflective of how much they like the teacher,
how many friends they have in the class and even how respected the subjects are
by others. A pupil’s achievements in subjects might equally be influenced by
the strength of the teaching or the level of motivation.
Scientifically-designed, psychometric measures try to look more at innate
potential and favoured behaviour and are, therefore, more valid, reliable and
scientific measures for career assessment in the UK. As business psychologists,
we are professionally- trained in psychometric assessment for career guidance,
selection and development.
It
is the combination of measures which is important. For example, if someone has
strong verbal reasoning, but shows on the personality as facts-oriented and
analytical, then Law may be a career option to consider. If, on the hand they
are strong verbally on the aptitude measure, but more feeling–driven and
creative according to the personality questionnaire, then English and literary
careers may be more suitable. Of course,
this is as true when selecting A Levels, as when choosing a degree or even a
career.
When
using career assessment services in the UK, it is also important to remember
that interests, personality and skills develop and change over time. A regular
career development check is advisable, to ensure that one is still on the right
path and best playing to one’s strengths. Some clients return to us at regular
intervals to reassess their direction.
