Career Assessment Test Leading
specialists in Career Assessment in the UK Guidance
We are qualified and experienced psychologists who
use career assessment tests in the UK (and sometimes globally) to identify clients’
strengths, and match their motivation, ability and personality to appropriate
careers. We highlight themes in interests, and their talents, strengths and
personal qualities, and we then provide guidance on the fields which best play
to these and which are most likely to maximise their potential and
fulfilment.
Career assessment tests in the UK are psychometric
measures which scientifically and objectively sample our clients’ behaviour and
ability. Results of reasoning measures predict someone’s likely performance in different
tasks, and personality measures indicate likely favoured behaviour and
reactions in various circumstances.
Selection
In selection, these measures may be a valuable
addition to an interview, which has been found to be unreliable and prone to
subjective bias (‘he’s good, he likes rugby like me’) and stereotyping (‘a
blond must be dumb’). Test results may confirm the interview panel’s thinking
but may also flag the candidate’s potential weaknesses and strengths.
Forewarned, the interviewer can employ suggested
interview prompts to investigate and explore whether the weakness really impacts
activities. The candidate may have developed strategies for counteracting a
disorganised approach; how does this person cope under pressure; is the
leadership style likely to be dictatorial and bullying or more visionary or collaborative;
does the person have the strong verbal reasoning necessary for writing policies
and reports; is the candidate competent in numerical reasoning to thus able to
handle budgets?
Obviously, it is important not to hire or reject a
candidate on the test results alone, but they could confirm a hunch, reassure,
or identify potential issues or development needs. Objective assessment of this
sort may also protect the selectors against future criticism or accusations of
bias.
The ideal scenario would be a battery of tests to
assess motivation, ability and personality. Does the candidate want the job and show passion and drive
for the work; is the candidate likely to
be able to do the job given highlighted skills, competencies and aptitudes;
and will the candidate fit in with
the team and organisational culture?
Assessment centres may also use a group role-play
exercise (an opportunity to see the candidates in action and to rate them
objectively on various competencies, e.g. leadership, communication or
influencing skills). Individual, in-tray exercises can further sample a
candidates ability to prioritise and think logically etc.
That good CV may conceal all manner of sins
(experience does not necessarily mean competence), and a good reference may be
one way of ensuring that a weak member of staff find employment elsewhere!
Mistakes in selection are costly and upsetting for all and psychometric
measures may afford some additional ‘insurance’.
Development
Career assessment tests in the UK are also used
in development appraisals and team building exercises. We advise our individual
clients on personal development needs and an employer may also use results to
identify training needs or to plan for succession. Our psychometric assessments
and professional advice can help employers ensure that people are best placed
and that potential of talent is maximised.
