UK's Leading Career Management Consultancy How can they do that to me when I have killed
myself for the firm? Why me – did I do something wrong? They can’t treat people
this way – there must have been something they could have done to keep us! Whatever shall to do – I have a mortgage!
Worrying! How many of us will be having these thoughts over
the coming months as the economy fights back from the pandemic and redundancies
increase? Our career management consultancy is already seeing greater numbers.
What if you are made Redundant? If you are made
redundant, you may experience a range of natural emotions such as shock,
denial, hurt and anger, which you will need to work through before being able
to accept and move on. Some may find it difficult to express and discuss your
feelings, and some may take longer than others to see light at the end of the
tunnel. It is important to remain cognisant that colleagues escaping the
redundancies may also suffer, feeling relief,
guilt, anger or insecurity. They will perhaps have to take on the responsibilities
of those who leave, and changes due to restructuring can feel threatening. Many
companies provide trained, redundancy counsellors to help work through such
feelings, but talking openly with a partner, relative, friend or close
colleague can obviously also help. Remain vigilant and try to be there for that
person who needs a shoulder. You need to channel your feelings and emotions
into moving forward with a positive mindset, rather than into regretfully looking
back.
Re-Evaluate Instead of viewing the situation as a
disaster, why not think of it as an opportunity to re-evaluate, particularly if
leaving with a redundancy payment as a financial cushion! Some out-placement professionals
can tend to steer people in the direction of similar jobs, but why not take
this opportunity to re-evaluate and consider where your skills and experience may
be transferable? Alternatively, this could be the perfect time to retrain, open
your own business, move to the countryside, or take a career break and travel!
This may be the incentive to follow those dreams and make a drastic career
change. Our career consulting services can help! Of course, you do not have to
have been made redundant to take advantage of our expertise and advice!
Take Control It is important to stay positive and to
take control rather than hide your head in the sand! What are your main worries?
What action needs and is able to be taken? Write a list and then prioritise:
-
Update your CV – a compelling
self-marketing document will make you feel more positive and will remind you of
all of the skills and experience which you have to offer. -
Take advice and investigate your
career prospects and explore alternative job fields (recruitment and career
consultants will help). -
Practise your interview techniques
in front of a mirror or with a friend. -
Network Actively (many jobs are typically found through who you know and not
what you know). -
Take practical measures, such as talking
to your mortgage and credit card companies to explore options. -
Make a list of the positives, and refer
back to them whenever negativity starts to creep in!
Besides advising on
direction, our career management consultancy can also support you in
self-marketing, (tips for CV wriitng and interview techniques training).
Stay Positive Try
the following techniques to focus on the positive and reduce pressure.
- Describe the situation. Check the facts. What is the reality? Pressure stems from your expectation of
the imagined consequences. 90 % of the time this reflects the acronym FEAR
(False Evidence Appearing Real). Remember that it is the position which is
redundant and not you . Everyone knows
that these are difficult times and this is nothing personal. You are not actually
unemployable!
- There is more
than one way to look at things. Positive perspectives reduce pressure. See this
as a great opportunity to change or progress!
- Try mixing with positive people, because attitudes are catching. Why not phone the most positive person
that you know for a chat!
- Thinking of how
things could be even worse can make things seem better. Imagining yourself as a
bag lady on a park bench will hopefully seem so absurd that it will make you
laugh and realise that things could be worse!
- Don’t keep on
about the hardships. Positive talk will reduce pressure. You are going to land
that dream job!
- Focus on the
funny side of the situation and lighten up. Laughing in the face of adversity
will make you stronger! At least you won’t have to suffer your boss’s body
odour any longer!
