Career Advisor - For the Right Career Choice
‘Find
a job you enjoy doing and you will never have to work a day in your life.’ Mark Twain
Actually, this quote seems to
have been attributed to many different people, but whoever did coin the phrase
was correct! If work feels like play,
you would be happy to do it for love rather than money, and you would be keen
to put lots of time and energy.
Quarter-life
career crises are little different from Mid-career crises. Young people may
have mapped out paths ....A-levels, University, well-paid job, but that job may
not turn out to be the ‘happy ever after’ they expected. It may not be
satisfying or there may be no life-work balance. No longer restricted by a need
to pay off a student debt, and still young, free and single, they may decide to
take a gap year, expecting that they will magically know what to do on their
return. However, often they are none the wiser and may take the easy option of
a return to their previous work, especially as they may now have gap year
debts!
As
a career change advisor, I am well aware that career theory shows that people
try out different jobs until they are about 25-30yrs and then they put down
roots and settle into a career until about 45-50yrs; they then have a mid-life
crisis and start to question whether they want to stay in the same field for
the rest of their working life! Career change is so much more common these days
and a ‘career for life’ is a thing of the past.
Today’s
workers are more discerning; people want careers which match who they are and
which are fulfilling as well as superficially successful. To identify a
suitable career at any life stage, you should consider motivation (your
interests, values, ethics, drive etc.), ability (your aptitudes, qualifications,
competencies and skills, and experience), and personal characteristics (your personality, emotional intelligence, ability to cope
with pressure etc.) . As a career change advisor, I can help with such self-
assessment.
Generally,
the decision should also take into consideration any children or a partner's
needs, as well as the location of desired employment or home, the need for
flexibility, and other obligations (such as aging parents or religious
restrictions). There are diverse factors to consider (family, mortgage, etc.),
but remember that it's never too late to change direction, especially with age
legislation, and there are many available distance-education, full-time and
part-time courses that can give you skills, credibility and marketability. An
agricultural college head gardener who had been frustrated with her job in her
40s had within a year of switching from being a PA, earned several awards from
the Chelsea flower show.
Even when aware of one's
strengths, it can be tricky to match them with the available options, and some
people value the confirmation that they are on the right course. A professional
career change advisor, who has a broad career knowledge is able to use
psychometric measures and counselling to provide that direction and, also, the
confidence to move forward and take the bull by the horns. We are career
analysts based in London, but Zoom makes us accessible globally, and we have
helped thousands of people find the right direction over more than 25 years.
